The History of the Yankees versus the Rangers
You could almost set your watch by it. In the late 1990s, when you saw the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers in the American League Division Series you knew it was October. In 1996, 1998 and 1999, the Yankees and the Rangers played one another in the postseason. Unfortunately for Texas baseball fans, the Yankees got the better of them each time and it wasn’t even close. The 1996 ALDS went four games while the 1998 and 1999 series ended in sweeps. The Rangers exacted a modicum of revenge in 2010 when they bested the Bronx Bombers in the American League Championship Series. The teams first regular season meeting was on April 30, 1961. The Yanks won 4-3.
Back then the Rangers were located in Washington and were known as the Senators. The franchise relocated to Arlington, Texas before the 1972 season. The “Senators” last home game in Washington, D.C. was against the Yankees. Fans were so upset with the owner of the Senators for moving the club to Texas that they stormed the field with their team just one out from victory. Security was nowhere to be found, they left long before the game started, and because of their absence a fan was able to steal a base. With the field in shambles, and no security to speak of, the umpires were left with no choice but to forfeit the game to the Yankees.

Yet it was the Yanks who ended up taking the division title. As the two teams prepare to start a three-game series Friday, the Yankees find themselves in first place with a four-game lead over the fourth-place Rays.

Mariano Rivera insists that no matter what the numbers look like, this season is still going to mark the end of his illustrious career. If so, then what a way to go out. Rivera has converted all 17 of his save opportunities, the second-longest such streak of his career, and he leads the American League in saves.

After two straight starts by Jurickson Profar at second base, Leury Garcia was in the lineup on Wednesday afternoon as the Rangers try to get by while Ian Kinsler is on the disabled list with a strained muscle in his right ribcage. Profar is the big prospect, but manager Ron Washington wants to keep Garcia engaged because he is expected to remain the Rangers' utility player once Kinsler returns.
The Rangers made room for right-hander Ross Wolf by sending reliever Cory Burns back to Triple-A Round Rock. The move leaves four left-handed relievers in the Rangers' seven-man bullpen.
Left-handed prospect Martin Perez missed two months with a broken left arm and the Rangers would like to give him more time before considering him as an option at the Major League level. But he is one of several under consideration to pitch the second game of a doubleheader against the Diamondbacks on Monday in Arizona.
