The History of the Yankees versus the Indians
The New York Yankees first played the Cleveland Indians on June 3, 1901. They won 7-2. Back then, the Yanks played in Baltimore and the Cleveland franchise was called the “Blues.” The complexion of the Yankees-Indians series, as well as the league, could have changed dramatically in 1972 had George Steinbrenner’s offer to buy the Tribe been accepted. It was not. Instead, he bought the Bronx Bombers in 1973 and the rest, as they say, is history. The two teams met in the 1997 American League Division Series. The Yankees were heavily favored to win but fell to the Tribe in five games. The Yankees got their revenge the following year when they defeated the Indians in the American League Championship Series in six games.
In 1998, the Yankees broke the American League record for most wins in the regular season with 114. The previous record was held by the 1954 Indians who won 111 games (although the season had eight fewer games). The teams would meet again in 2007 playoffs. The Yankees were eliminated in four games in a series marred by a swarm of bugs. Another memorable moment in the history of the Yankees-Indians series, at least from Cleveland’s perspective, occurred on the last day of August, 2004. In a game at Yankee Stadium, the Indians defeated the Pinstripers, 22-0.

One year ago on May 22, the roles were reversed: The Rays had a 26-18 record and a 3 1/2-game lead over the Yankees for second place in the American League East. Yet it was the Yanks who ended up taking the division title. As the two teams prepare to start a three-game series Friday, the Yankees find themselves in first place with a four-game lead over the fourth-place Rays.

The revival of Scott Kazmir is still a process in the making.
Indians manager Terry Francona will return to Fenway Park for the first time as the skipper of a team besides the Red Sox on Thursday.
Lineup depth is something the Indians have in bunches.
The Indians scored five runs on 10 hits in five innings against Tigers ace Justin Verlander, but Ubaldo Jimenez's struggles created too big a hole in Wednesday's 11-7 defeat.
The first-place Indians are a blast to watch these days, and part of the reason for that is second baseman Jason Kipnis, who may be on the verge of becoming a legitimate star.
Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera might impact a game more than any other hitter in baseball right now. Cabrera's influence on an outcome was certainly evident on Tuesday night, when the Indians took their chances with pitching to him at a critical juncture of a 5-1 loss.
